Daily Prompt #1: Optimism

Daily writing prompt
What change, big or small, would you like your blog to make in the world?

If my blog were to bring about any change in the world, I think it would be to bring a bit of optimism back to the modern world for younger professionals / people in general. On social media it’s hard to not get caught up in the silo of content that’s constantly screaming about how difficult the job market is, and how people are losing hope in their ability to thrive in the workplace at all due to various reasons. While work shouldn’t be your whole life, it simply is a huge part of it by default.

I’m currently reading The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel in my spare time, and in chapter 17, he talks about the attractiveness that comes along with pessimism. He quotes the historian Deirdre McCloskey, “For reasons I have never understood, people like to hear that the world is going to hell.” I love this chapter because it explains that it’s not that we DON’T like optimism….it just so happens that optimism is harder to track or pinpoint because good things often grow slowly over time. Pessimism can usually be pinpointed more clearly to a few events or instances, and it grabs our attention super quickly whether it even impacts us or not (hence, the “WE’RE ALL DOOMED” social media silos). Cheers to bringing back optimism.
