Preventing Burnout:

How Mangers can Support Gen Z without Self-Sacrificing

Why Good Managers Burn Out

If you’re a manager who burns out often, then it’s most likely because you care deeply. Your constant over-explaining,  micromanaging, and overextending is because ultimately you take pride in your work and you want your people to succeed.

Unfortunately, the hard truth is that those behaviors are not sustainable.

Which is why it’s time to shift gears, from control to influence.

Control vs Influence

Author Brian Klass in his book Fluke, explains the idea that we technically control nothing, but influence everything. Most outcomes are shaped by factors you can’t actually control, so give yourself permission to let go.

  • Control sounds like: “If I do everything right, they’ll grow.”
  • Influence sounds like: “If I create the right conditions, growth becomes possible.”

Focus on what you can control and create systems that set your employees up for success:

  • Written guides
  • Quick & easy access video tutorials
  • Screenshots and visuals

Flexible Leadership

Struggling to get away from the desk? Try a walking 1:1. These low-stress and energizing check-ins will help both you and your employee step outside of the office without feeling like you had to make a trade off between supporting them and taking care of your own well-being.

Flexible managers plan for freedom!

Lastly, Rest is King

Burnout is not a badge of honor to be worn from week to week. No one, including your team / employees who you work so hard to support, actually benefits from you having an empty tank. You’re allowed to lead with strength and heart, but make sure to put some of that energy towards leading yourself to rest and rejuvenate as needed. Even if it’s just for a minute.

See you next week!

Peace,
